A Promising Athlete Remembered for His Talent and Leadership
Missouri State University announced with deep sorrow that standout football player Todric McGee, aged 21, passed away early Saturday at a local hospital due to injuries he sustained the previous day at his residence in Springfield, Missouri.
Ongoing Investigation into the Incident
According to the Springfield Police Department, officers responded to a wellness check call on Friday morning, where McGee was found injured. Authorities stated that the injury may have been caused by an accidental self-inflicted wound. He was transported immediately to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
As of now, the official cause of death has not been confirmed, and the case remains under active investigation. Authorities have not released further details, and the university has asked the public to respect the privacy of McGee’s family and teammates during this difficult time.
A Key Player for Missouri State Football
McGee, a native of Wichita, Kansas, had been a vital member of the Missouri State Bears football team for the past three seasons. Known for his defensive strength and leadership on the field, he quickly became one of the top performers on the roster.
His most notable season came in 2023, when he earned second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors with 102 total tackles, including 59 solo stops, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.
Despite an injury that cut short his 2024 season after five games, McGee still managed to make a significant impact, tallying 42 tackles, one interception, and five pass deflections. He was expected to play a leading role in the Bears' upcoming season as they transition into Conference USA.
Support from the Missouri State Community
Missouri State Athletic Director Patrick Ransdell expressed condolences in an official statement, emphasizing the availability of grief counseling for student-athletes and staff.
“This tragedy has deeply impacted our football program. We are standing with Todric’s family, teammates, and friends during this difficult time.”
Head Coach Ryan Beard also shared his thoughts:
“Our football family is mourning this unimaginable loss. Todric was not only a great player but also a beloved teammate. We kindly ask for privacy and continued prayers for everyone affected.”
McGee’s Early Career and Legacy
Before joining Missouri State, McGee was a standout athlete at Wichita Northwest High School, where he earned all-state honors and helped lead his team to a state runner-up finish. He also participated in basketball and track and received offers from Army, Air Force, and Southeast Missouri.
McGee’s impact both on and off the field will be remembered by his coaches, teammates, and the entire Missouri State community.
