Trump Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Image Portraying Him as Pope

AI Image Shared Amid Mourning for Pope Francis

U.S. President Donald Trump is facing criticism from Catholic leaders and public figures after sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope. The image, posted on official White House social media accounts, came just days after the death of Pope Francis on April 21. The Catholic community is currently mourning and preparing for the papal conclave to elect the next Pope.

Accusations of Mockery from Catholic Leaders

The New York State Catholic Conference, which represents bishops across the state, condemned the image, accusing President Trump of disrespecting the faith. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the group wrote:
"There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us."

Trump’s Previous Comments About the Papacy

The controversy follows a recent comment by Trump in which he joked to reporters, "I'd like to be Pope." Critics have viewed both the comment and the image as insensitive, especially during a time of mourning for Catholics around the world.

Details of the Controversial Image

The AI-generated image shows Trump wearing a traditional white papal cassock and a pointed mitre. A large cross hangs from his neck, and he is depicted with a serious facial expression, holding one finger in the air—echoing typical papal imagery.

International Criticism from Political Figures

Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, known for his left-leaning views, also condemned the post. Writing in Italian on X, Renzi said:
"This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions, and shows that the leader of the right-wing world enjoys clowning around."

White House Defends Trump’s Actions

Despite the backlash, the White House has denied that Trump intended to mock the Catholic Church. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated:
"President Trump flew to Italy to pay his respects to Pope Francis and attend his funeral. He has been a staunch champion for Catholics and religious liberty."

Vatican Maintains Silence

When asked about the incident during a press briefing on Saturday, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to comment. The Vatican is currently focused on preparations for the upcoming conclave, which will begin on Wednesday.
